International Chinese Language Day Celebrated in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, April 26 — The International Chinese Language Day 2026 was celebrated in Kathmandu with a grand program organized by the Confucius Institute at Tribhuvan University, in collaboration with the China Cultural Center in Nepal, Confucius Institute at Kathmandu University, LRI Confucius Classroom, and China Southern Airlines.
The event, held at Mahal Banquet under the theme “Chinese Language: Lighting Up Colorful Dreams,” brought together distinguished guests, academicians, students, and cultural enthusiasts to promote Chinese language education and Nepal–China cultural ties.
Addressing the program, Chief Guest H.E. Mr. Zhang Maoming, Ambassador of China to Nepal, appreciated the contributions of institutions and individuals involved in promoting Chinese language education in Nepal. He stated that the Chinese language serves as an important bridge connecting civilizations, enhancing mutual understanding, and strengthening people-to-people relations.
Vice Chancellor of Tribhuvan University, Prof. Dr. Deepak Aryal, highlighted the long-standing academic cooperation between Nepal and China. He noted that Chinese language education at Tribhuvan University dates back to 1961 and has expanded significantly with the establishment of the Confucius Institute. Currently, around 700 students are studying Chinese through 14 teaching centers across the country.
Speakers from partner Chinese universities emphasized that the Chinese language, with its rich cultural heritage, plays a vital role in promoting global communication and intercultural dialogue. They also underscored the importance of academic exchange and collaboration in strengthening bilateral relations.
The program featured a variety of cultural performances, including Chinese and Nepali songs, traditional dances, Taijiquan, poetry recitation, and drama. Interactive activities such as calligraphy, paper-cutting, and tea ceremony were also organized, offering participants a hands-on experience of Chinese culture.
On the occasion, outstanding students were recognized, and a lucky draw was conducted. The event concluded with a vote of thanks, group photo session, and cultural interaction activities.
The celebration highlighted the growing importance of Chinese language education in Nepal and its role in fostering closer cultural and academic ties between Nepal and China.
