Who is Sharda Prasad Chalise?

Sharda Prasad Chalise is a skilled community forestry activist, a man who was born in the fertile land of Sindhupalchok district and who made social transformation the noble goal of his life. Born in Pangretar, Sindhupalchok (currently residing in Sunkoshi Rural Municipality-7, Dadadihi), Sharda Prasad Chalise is a multidimensional personality. Raised in a simple family, he has dedicated himself not only to improving his own life but also to guiding the entire community toward a positive direction. After completing his education at Shree Seti Devi Sharda Secondary School and Jalpa Secondary School in Sindhupalchok, he decided to dedicate his future to service and the welfare of society. In the beginning, he became involved with various local non-governmental and cooperative organizations, working on education, health, drinking water, land and forest rights, wildfire awareness, and other social causes, reaching even the most remote villages of the district. Going from village to village, spreading awareness among Community Forest User Groups, he became the voice of the voiceless, worked to establish rights for the powerless, and emerged as a community forest activist dedicated to wildfire control. Believing that field practice and training are essential for community forest groups to remain disciplined, healthy, and environmentally conscious, he invested deep interest in this area. He actively engaged in forest development, environmental protection, wildfire control, biodiversity conservation, and climate change mitigation, taking training through various organizations and becoming a part of the district’s Green Volunteer initiative. He received membership in the Federation of Community Forest Users Nepal (FECOFUN), but instead of limiting himself to membership, he contributed further through writing articles and creative works, spreading the simple yet powerful message: “Forests are the wealth of the people, and we must protect them from wildfires.”

Sharda Prasad Chalise is also a skilled community forestry activist and coordinator of Green Volunteers. His writings on wildfire control are equally moving and inspiring. Since 2077 B.S. (2020 A.D.), he has been leading a wildfire control campaign. His efforts included forest conservation, biodiversity preservation, protecting green oxygen, mitigating climate change, and preventing forests from turning into carbon sources. To establish Sindhupalchok as a model district of “Green Volunteers,” he tirelessly carried wildfire awareness campaigns across Melamchi, Helambu, Panchpokhari, Indrawati, Chautara, Jugal, Balefi, Sunkoshi, Barhabise, Tripura, Lisankhu-Pakhar, Bhotekoshi, and many other municipalities and rural municipalities. Alongside wildfire control, he also led cleanliness campaigns and environmental protection drives. His campaign for wildfire control and environmental conservation ran continuously from 2077 B.S. until Jestha 2082 B.S. (2020–2025 A.D.), and it succeeded because of his courage and determination. He implemented fire line construction, fire line cleaning, controlled burning, and community-forest-based enterprises. These efforts not only protected forests but also connected forestry with tourism, helping promote Sindhupalchok district. Products made from sal leaves, such as traditional leaf plates and cups, provided partial employment to communities and gained recognition.

Today, Sharda Prasad Chalise is recognized as one of the community forestry activists who introduced Sindhupalchok as a model district of Nepal to the world. Since Sindhupalchok is also the origin place of community forestry and the first district where the “Green Volunteer” concept was introduced, his constant efforts have made him known as a true son of Sindhu — a skilled and dedicated activist born from the soil of Sindhupalchok. At present, Sharda Prasad Chalise is known by multiple titles: community forestry activist, wildfire controller, environmental conservationist, community-forest-based entrepreneur, and coordinator of the Green Volunteers operated by the Division Forest Office. His contributions have been widely shared with the public through the efforts of journalists via YouTube, TikTok, TV, newspapers, and online media.Born in Sindhupalchok, he has not only made his district and country known through forestry, tourism, climate change awareness, and wildfire control, but also earned recognition internationally. The life story of Sharda Prasad Chalise is a clear example that extraordinary contributions can arise from ordinary backgrounds. His campaigns are not just entertainment but a powerful means of social and community transformation. By linking people and forests together, he awakened environmental consciousness among communities. His journey inspires all communities with one message: whatever we do, if we connect it with the welfare of society, the country, and the environment, our forests will remain green, our lives will be healthy, and our campaigns will be meaningful.
