Everest Engineering College, Sanepa, Lalitpur, organized a talk program on Save the Himalayas today at the college Seminar Hall. Mr. Basanta Shrestha, former Director at ICIMOD presented evidences of gradually weakening Himalayan mountains, thawing permafrost, increasing steepness of the hills and mountains due to toe cutting of the mountains by the floods, increasing glacial lake sizes, and decreasing snow cover over the higher Himalayas due to temperature increase. The emphasis of the talk program was on the concept of Build Back Safer through three preparedness steps and five steps after a disaster event. Senior engineers Bigyan Shrestha, Badan Lal Nyachhyon, Moti Bahadur Kunwar, Mahendra Bahadur Gurung, and Sohan Shrestha raised various issues related to better disaster preparedness, following the main lecture by Basanta Shrestha. Engineer Sojen Pradhan from University of Technology Sydney, Australia, suggested increasing the content on disaster knowledge in the school curriculum of Nepal, following the international practices. Engineer Romharsh Oli suggested on the need to review the current design standards of infrastructure development projects, to better prepare Nepal for future maga flood disasters. The Chief Executive Officer of Everest Engineering College Mr. Arun Kumar Bhandari expressed college’s willingness to collaborate with the practitioners to impart latest knowledge, including the use of AI, in disaster risk mitigation. The program was organized by Everest Engineering College in association with the Rotary Club of Yala.
